Solicitor Pathway
Introduction
Becoming a solicitor is a career pathway for both law and non-law students who are looking towards the corporate work life. Students should develop their transferrable skills such as problem-solving, teamwork, communication, critical analysis and more. Solicitors offer legal advice, represent clients, manage cases in various areas of law such as commercial, innovation, employment and more.
Career
During your time at Lancaster University, focus on building a strong academic foundation by engaging with your law modules and getting involved in mooting, pro bono work, or society events. Work experience such as vacation schemes, internships, or shadowing a solicitor will give you valuable insight into the profession and help build your skills. Developing commercial awareness through following legal news, business updates, and firm insights is also key to standing out during applications. After graduating, you can qualify through the Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE), and some students choose to further their expertise with postgraduate study such as Law School training or an LLM.
How do we help?
Each year, we host events designed to enhance employability — including Negotiation and Commercial Awareness Competitions, workshops, and our flagship Law Summit, where members can connect with leading law firms and legal professionals. Work experience is difficult to obtain as everyone knows; LULAWSOC aims to expose our members to opportunities to grow their network, provide mock assessment and interview workshops, and remind members of key deadlines.
Barrister Pathway
Introduction
If you love debating, public speaking and facing complex legal problems, then a career as a barrister is perfect for you! Barristers represent clients in court, give specialist legal advice, and use advocacy skills to argue cases. To get started, participate in mini‑pupillages, mooting, and shadowing judges or barristers will help you understand the profession and build the skills you’ll need at the Bar.​
Career
During your time at Lancaster University, focus on building key skills through mooting, debating, and engaging in advocacy‑based activities. Work experience such as mini‑pupillages, marshalling, and shadowing barristers will give you valuable insight into the day‑to‑day life at the Bar. After completing your undergraduate degree, aspiring barristers must complete a Bar training course and join one of the Inns of Court. The final step is securing and completing a pupillage, which provides hands‑on experience and allows you to qualify and practise as a barrister.

Lancaster University Law Society is committed to supporting members who aspire to pursue a career at the Bar. Throughout the year, we host events such as mooting and debating competitions, advocacy workshops, and networking evenings with barristers and chambers to help develop essential courtroom and communication skills.
